Hydrantula structures are engineered to internationally recognised coastal-engineering standards and developed to meet Singapore's regulatory requirements. This page sets out the design basis, the materials conformance approach, the durability strategy and the verification pathway, and how each is evidenced for Singapore PUB and BCA. Materials & quality assurance

Materials are specified and qualified for the marine environment: concrete to SS EN 206 with its complementary Singapore Standard SS 544, and GFRP reinforcement to ASTM D7957 designed to ACI CODE-440.11-22. As a non-standard concrete solution, equivalent performance against conventional concrete is demonstrated through the BCA route for innovative concrete solutions, using durability tests such as chloride permeability, carbonation, water penetration and sulphate resistance. Proprietary fittings are traceable, and assembly is completed onshore under controlled quality conditions before placement

Durability
& design life

The structural core is corrosion-free, with GFRP reinforcement and no steel to corrode, encased in a permanent HDPE barrier. Design life is addressed on a project basis to the design-life requirements of the Singapore National Annex to SS EN 1990; where the requirement exceeds the baseline of an individual component, a documented alternative methodology is developed and agreed with the accredited checker. Durability is substantiated by testing and by an inspection and maintenance regime, not asserted

Design basis & methodology

Wave loading, overtopping, toe stability and scour are assessed using internationally recognised methods, including USACE EM 1110-2-1100 and EM 1110-2-1614, the CIRIA Rock Manual, EurOtop and PIANC, with maritime works to BS 6349. Structural and geotechnical design follows the Eurocode framework as adopted in Singapore: SS EN 1990 with its Singapore National Annex, and SS EN 1997-1. Each structure is designed to the performance and durability requirements appropriate to its location and exposure

Verification
& validation

Hydraulic and structural performance is verified by calculation to the standards above and validated through CFD analysis and physical-model testing. Designs are subject to independent checking by an accredited checker in line with Singapore requirements. Quantified performance figures are company estimates, confirmed by project-specific testing

Regulatory Compliance

In Singapore, coastal protection works are governed by PUB's Code of Practice on Coastal Protection (CPCOP). Hydrantula's methodology rests on the same internationally recognised standards that the Code adopts, and each scheme is developed to meet its planning, design, and inspection and maintenance requirements

Approvals follow the Code's gateway process. The design basis and any alternative methodology are presented to the Board (PUB) and BCA at the Design Gateway; load combinations and partial factors are submitted at the Construction Gateway; and the works are signed off at the Completion Gateway. Submissions are made by the project's Qualified Person and are subject to independent review by an accredited checker

For novel elements, such as the GFRP-reinforced, HDPE-encased core, compliance combines the alternative-methodology route, approved by the Board and BCA, with the BCA equivalent-performance route for the concrete.
